I am on a network computer, and recently had to have Microsoft Office re-installed. But now, whenever I open a single Excel spreadsheet, my machine automatically opens 54 more until I have a total of 55 different spreadsheets open!

I asked our IT expert, and he looked perplexed, which is frightening. (Kind of like how you don't want your doctor to say, "I've never seen this before!") I have run Symantec anti-virus, with virus definitions updated today. Can a computer be possessed? :o)

Answer from O Caçador looks pretty promising, but if that's not the case - check for the following:

Is any of these 54 spreadsheets an auto recover file? That happens if Excel crashes when one or more of the spreadsheets were opened but the content was not saved since last update. Since Excel keeps taking auto save actions, when you open the excel after the crash, it opens all the spreadsheets that were forced to close because of the crash.

Just throwing some thoughts.

After trying all these steps from the above answerers, and you still facing the problem, you need to
1- Open Excel once, Go to Tools > Macro > Security, and make sure you have a "High" selected, you may have a macro running and open these files.
2- Make sure you don'e have any file in the folder named XLStart, found either in C: > Program Files > Microsoft Office, or in subfolders, or in C: > Documents and Settings > you will see a folder with your user name, open it > Application Data > Microsoft > Excel
I prefer to search for [XLStart] in C: to find these folders
3- Go to C: > Documents And Settings,
you will see a folder with your user name, open it, and serach withen that folders (And subfolders) for a file with extension of XLB, this where Excel saves your Excel user interface settings.
Move it to another location (You can delete it, but you will loose all you customizations in Excel interface)

- Do not forget to search withen hidden folders and files to find those.
- Try the first option then, if not done, try second option, if not, try third
- If you find at least one file, then make sure it does not have a macro to open others.

All these stuff should solve the problem, if not mail me here

Under the Tools menu, under Options, go to the General tab. Make sure that the number of Sheets in New Workbook is not 54 or 55. The default is 3.
