I have tried everything...taking things away....washing his mouth out with soap..we have tried goal charts..that he would earn something if he did not swear for a period of time we started out with a day and yeah that didn't work, we also came up with a word bank of acceptable words..not working..we have been doing all of theses things for a while and we gave each one a very good try..we didn't just try them for a day and give up..I do not know what else to do with him..I send him to his roomtill he can act like a proper 8 year old. I also have a daycare out of my house and he has a 5 year old brother and a 16 month old sister....he knows it is wrong and we have had many long talks. I am in need of some suggestions!!!!!

I agree with the first response, spank every time he does this. Kids aren't stupid, he will soon stop.

He is swearing for attention - everytime he swears he gets a reaction out of you. Ignore him COMPLETELY everytime he swears - don't say a word, don't look at him don't answer to him - treat him like he is invisable for 10 to 15 minutes. Otherwise, give him positive re-inforcements for simple things - saying please and thank you and using manners - go a little overboard with these praises and shower him with attention. When he's not swearing talk to him about how nice it is to be around boys who don't swear.

Still not working after 1 week - don't say anything to him, just pick him up and put him in a room - without toys or tv, blankets or pillows or anything fun in it and leave him in there for up to 1/2 an hour without speaking to him. In addition to this - take all of his toys away EVERY SINGLE TOY and make him earn them back ONE AT A TIME. When you take them away explain to him that swearing is a nasty behaviour and when he can get through ___ # of hours without swearing he can earn back a toy - if he swears - they all get taken away again.

Tough love - but it works.

Good luck.

lol! I really don't mean to laugh, but when you said he swears like a pirate...I just cracked up! Seriously, I know you are frustrated and nothing is working, but have you or your husband (mainly your husband) considered spanking? He needs a firm voice AND a firm hand to show him that kind of language is unacceptable. And when he uses it, he will face the consequences. In addition, continue to take away the things that he likes. Eventually he will see that if he behaves and watches his mouth, he can enjoy the things he used to have the privilege of doing. He has to understand that disobedience does not go unpunished. I wish you good luck.

He wants attention. If you and your husband are not doing this then it must be the tv, visitors, kids you are sitting for, or uncle ferd and grandma Maude.

Simply say no, beat his a s s, and confine him in his room without television, toys, etc.

He will soon tire of this. Don't give in. If it is from visitors, relatives, etc, get rid of them. Lay down the law about language and if nothing changes, then change them by not having them around your child. If it is your little charges in your daycare, then get rid of them. If it is tv, and it probably is, shut it off.

Have a little container, whenever he swears take a dollar away from him and if you do dont buy him as much stuff as he wants just give him some money so he knows if he wants somthing he cant swear because he wont have any money to buy it.

Someone at home or in the school is teaching him these terms.

Try rewards for a day of not swearing. Anything like a new computer game, a treat at the store. Let him decide what will be his reward after a week of non swearing.

Here's a good one (okay, maybe it isn't so good):

Every time he swears, snatch him up and tell him in an angry tone: "You swear again, and I will rip your tongue out of your mouth and nail it to your forehead, agreed?!!" It shows him only bad things come from cursing.

Of course there are other variations, which are only limited to your imagination...

("I'll yank your eyes out with a crow bar, put it in a jar of acid, tear open your guts, wrap your intestines around your neck, hang you off a light post outside by it, rip open your stomach, douse you in the acid, pull out your heart, mail it to a girl in China, take a saw, open your forehead, put your brain in a blender, liquefy it, rip off your head, pour your brain down your throat, and call it a smart shake!!!!!!!")

Have fun.

If you tried the curse jar, taking things aways from him
maybe it's time to resort to an old-fashioned spanking.

1. Get a good tape recorder and record while is swearing. Make sure that he doesn't know it.
2. Play the tape while he is eating or seriously busy somewhere.
3. Ask him, how was the show !!!
4. I am sure that he will realise his mistake..........At least try it out.

You have him living in a gutter environment. Move somewhere or have him go somewhere where that type of behavior is looked down upon. Everyone has a need for acceptance, he'll change accordingly.
