I want to permanently loosen my tight curls, will perming it with large rods work?

I want to permanently loosen my tight curls, will perming it with large rods work? If so, what size? I see that 9/16 (aka 3/4) inch seems to be the right size.

Is that right?

My hair is long (a few inches past my shoulders) -- middle of back when straightened.
