A clicker is a small plastic/metal thing that makes a sound. The sound is used to mark the "event" or thing you want your dog to repeat.

So you click when your dog's butt hits the ground to mark a sit.

The clicker was originally used with large sea mammals like killer whales. As I'm sure you realize, a choke collar is not an effective way to train something that can swallow you in one gulp.

Clicker training is based on something called "operant conditioning."

Its literally a clicker, you click it when the dog does the behavior you want. Personally I think its worhtless, eventually you phase out the clicker anyway, so there is no point. I went through a class with it out of curiosity and was not impressed. Just my opinion though.

A Clicker is a small device that fits into the palm of your hand and you use your finger to snap it. A Dog trained to a clicker will come, sit, fetch, all based on a click rather than a voice command

It is an annoying gadget. You can mark behavior with a "yes" or "good", you don't need a stupid clicker.
