why wont my windows media player play avi files? what do i need to play these files?

It should, try upgrading WMP to the latest version. You could also try AlShow...it's what I use and I love it because it's much faster than WMP.

All avi files are compressed by software called codecs. If you don't have the right codec installed then the avi file won't play.
If you check out Download.com and search for codecs. there are a few programmes that bundle all the most common ones together for you to install.
Make sure its a free version though!

rite in version 11 go to:

Now playing on the arrow below it then,

File types

then select what you want type of file you want to include or play using windows media player!

(ok hope this helps)!!
(version 11 is much better anyway)!!
