believe me the router is the most versatile tool you can buy, you do need a fairly large selection of cutters, the best advice i could give is to visit your local library and borrow some of the vast range of books and manuals of router techniques its range and uses are far too numerous to be listed here, its a great tool and easy to use,
good luck

Do you mean, "What is the basic use of a wood router"?

To rout wood, obviously. This means cutting a decorative moulding on the edge, or through the middle. I see them used all the time to make signs, etc. The operator cuts the numbers and letters into the middle of a piece of wood, then paints it to make it stand out.

A router is as versatile as your imagination. I used one recently to do halving joints (in the thickness ) in skirting boards to create long boards from shorter ones. Created a jig, perfect.

Generating huge quantities of sawdust!
Great for putting decorative edgings on wood, slotting and channeling, making dovetail joints (expensive jigs required for dovetails).
Like all power woodworking tools, care is needed

In the Midwest, we would go to Menard's. The prices are cheaper than Home Depot. They have a good, cheap in-house brand called Tool Shop.
