We have a very dark brown cat that looks oriental, but doesn't sound it. His mother was a smokey grey shorthair with very feint tabby stripes, but the father was a one night stand - breed unknown. We just want to know what he is!

Hi there...at this time DNA testing for pet animals isn't considered cost-effective so there are few facilities equipped to handle this unusual request. Generally, if a kitten wasn't directly purchased from a private breeder who supplied registry papers to prove it's pedigree it would then be considered (in your kitty's situation) domestic short hair tabby (also known as DSH Tabby). Your vet can confirm this as well.

No. At this time there is no DNA test for dog or cats to confirm breed.

I can tell you what he is....a DSH..domestic shorthair. A CAT. I see oriental looking cats all the time in many different litters. Means NOTHING!!!!!!

DNA PROFILING for pets is actually quite cost effective. For dogs it is $45. For a little more, parentage can be proven....with DNA samples from both parents. You cannot even do that as you lack the father!!!

THERE IS STILL NO DNA TEST TO PROVE BREED IN EITHER CATS OR DOGS!

Your nuts....you would waste money on a DNA test and then a sample check against biological background because you want to know if your cats a mongrel or not.
Send the money to my paypal account instead and I will buy my children Xmas presents with it.

yes im sure you can but it would take alot of time and money, I would be tempted to just leave it and love your cat for what he is
