"I was born a Baptist and I shall remain a Baptist" (Aunt Esther said to Fred Sanford in SANFORD AND SON)
I have never been impressed by the Pentecostal-movement in the US.
To me (and this is my personal opinion), it appears to be a bunch of hypocritical nonsense.
We have thousands of Pentecostal churches in Birmingham, Alabama and anytime I'm invited to one, I politely decline to worship there.
It has been my experience that in addition to a convoluted Gospel being preached, the worship service itself is too, too long!
I don't think it takes all day to worship...not if everything is done decently and in order!
Some of these churches do encourage their women to belong to what I call THE SKIRT POSSE'....and...the purpose of dressing in such a plain and unattractive manner is beyond me!
BUT...ultimately the final decision is yours.
I suggest you do your homework and see if this is really for you; before you 'dive in' completely!

I go to a pentecostal church, but consider myself non-denominational. You won't go to heave for being a pentecostal, you'll go to heaven for having faith in Jesus and loving Him with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength.
Our church itself does not have all kinds of strict rules on hair, clothing, etc. I wore jeans and a t-shirt last night.
There are many different pentecostal churches though. I have a problem with some of the doctrine that are pretty central to pentecostal churches though.
1) Speaking in tongues is not the only evidence of the holy spirit.
1 Corinthians 12:30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? -The context here is that we are all one body in Christ, but we have different gifts.
2) I don't believe in strict clothing guidelines, such as a man has to wear a long sleeved button up shirt with a black tie every day or something like that. But then I suppose that's case by case, maybe if they only require certain dress while in church, and don't make you think that you're going to Hell if you don't dress exactly right. I don't think anyone is going to burn for wearing the wrong colored shirt. It MUST however be kept in mind that whatever anyone wears, male or female, it MUST be modest. I personally don't believe that form-fitting jeans can be considered modest.
I would suggest whole-heartedly that if you want to know what that individual church believes, to ask someone that goes there, probably someone such as a deacon or the pastor. If they're not open to discuss it with you, then that's not a good sign at all. If anything sounds funny - even remotely - test it according to the bible. If it doesn't add up, don't join.

This is a great question. At my church (Been going for 12 years) Men can wear t- shirts. We wear nylons if we want to. I am a sandal lover myself. We celebrate most holidays... we tend to shy away from Halloween. If you have any specific questions email please.
I was 17 when I started going and came from a very un-Christian back ground. When converts start talking about which religion they converted from, i.e. "I was raised baptist" I like to jokingly reply "I was raised hippie."
Just start by forming a relationship with God and not other things. You do not have to conform to go. Eventually God will start dealing with you about other things. If something feels like a bondage don't do it. Because I have seen it drag girls down. You should focus on Jesus not anything or anyone else. You obvious feel something drawing you there, the same as I did.
There is a deep personal relationship that can develop between Jesus and yourself. There are people that get focused on the outward appearene. They somehow start to believe that this what saves them when it is not. They become "bench warmers". They go to church and wear their skirt and that is the end of there relationship with God.
Honestly going to the pentecostal church was the best decision I have ever made. God bless you.

There are no set 'rules' like that by doctrine. Certain stuffed shirts who attend said church may have local rules that are imposed by peer pressure, but there are no 'official' rules that I know of. I worship in the Assemblies of God church. We are Pentecostal in worship and in practice. I was saved, baptized in water, and baptized in the Holy Spirit in blue jeans. There are standards of decency, i.e. things that are frowned upon like miniskirts and massive cleavage, etc. Even that is not straight-up Biblical, it's just peoples' personal preferences. Anyway, God looks on the heart. And Jesus accepts you as you are. Men wear t-shirts, women wear nylons [and even make-up], we celebrate most all holidays [except maybe Halloween], and the services are awesome - usually with a worship team of singers and instruments, the gifts of the Holy Spirit are in evidence, and God's name is glorified. Not every church is the same, and none are perfect, but God is a rewarder of those who dilligently seek Him. I hope you find a good church where you can worship God and be edified without a lot of petty dress code rules ruining it for you. God bless.

I'm even more confused than before you asked the question! You'd think the god that talks to these people would have give a consistant answer to them about a basic human necessity (clothes)!
Some god has no doubt, been talking to some of these people. And if you listen to the preachers; he's most certainly been in direct communication with them. Now with all this communicating, since the beginning of time, there can be no consistant answer to such a basic question! WOW!
I think it's evident that a god is not talking to these pentacostals, and these pentacostals are not TALKING to each other!

Forget what you can and cannot wear....when you get saved you are filled with the Holy Spirit at the the time of your new birth. Jesus Himself commanded us to baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost...ie the trinity...NOT in Jesus name alone! Want to be "filled with the Holy Ghost and have the evidence in your life? It's not by speaking in tongues...the trick is.."He must increase and I must decrease" John 3:30. The more you yield yourself to God, the more evident He is in your life! Then read Ephesians chapter 5 to see WHAT the fruit of the Spirit is....(note that speaking in tongues is NOT mentioned)! Charismatics such as pentecostals tend to give more glory to the Holy Spirit than to Jesus, and the Spirit ALWAYS glorifies the SON!

They will try to take over every part of your life...very judgemental and domineering group. It will do nothing but cause strife in your home life. Will divide the family, believers against non-believers. It's subtle but it's there. Raised in it. Got out as quick as I could. Remember thinking as s child "how can these people be so brainwashed".

Tyne,
Jesus doesn't care what you wear or what you look like. He is interested in your heart. That is where your true beauty lies.
Yes, we need to dress modestly (as we don't want our Christian brothers to stumble and fall.) That's a two way street. They too need to dress respectfully...use your judgment in this area. You know what is modest and what isn't.
Religion is man's way of trying to reach God.
Relationship is God's way of reaching us, through Jesus Christ.
In your paragraph, I can't find anywhere in the Holy Bible where it states what we can and can't wear...it only tells us to be modest.
As for cutting your hair, that is mentioned but if you continue in the passage (1 Cor. not sure what chapter/verse) it tells us (women) not to shave our heads. Just be careful it's not been taken out of context.
Please make sure this Church you are a going to be attending is teaching from the Holy Bible. I encourage you to read over the New Testament (doesn't matter which translation). Start with Jude (the book before Revelation) and go toward Matthew.
Best wishes!

I WOULD ASK YOUR PREACHER-MINISTER ABOUT THEIR CHURCH! I WAS RAISED PENTECOSTAL AND THERE IS SEVERAL FORMS OF THEM.THEY ALL HAVE DIFFERENT THINGS THEY BELIEVE SO THEY CAN'T BE SUMMED UP SO EASILY. THERE ARE ONES THAT BELIEVE WOMEN CAN'T CUT THEIR HAIR, HAVE TO WEAR DRESSES OR SKIRTS , NO MAKE UP, NO TV, NO HALLOWEEN, WEAR LONG SLEEVES EVEN DURING THE SUMMER, MEN HAVE TO WEAR BUTTON UP SHIRTS. THEY ALSO JUDGE PEOPLE A LOT . WHICH IS WRONG! THE OTHER PENTECOSTAL FOLKS CAN WEAR PANTS SOME SHORTS SOME MAKE UP, THEY STILL JUDGE PEOPLE WHICH IS WRONG. THEY ALL HAVE WEIRD BELIEVES. I'M NOT SAYING THEIR RELIGION IS WRONG IT WAS NOT FOR ME.I WAS RAISED PENTECOSTAL SO I HAVE SOME INSIGHT ON IT.WHEN I WAS OLD ENOUGH TO CHOOSE I GOT OUT AS FAST I COULD AND CHOOSE ANOTHER RELIGION WHO DID NOT JUDGE AS MUCH OR FEUD WITH EACH OTHER AS MUCH.THEY SEEM TO KIND OF DO THAT A LOT.SO PLEASE JUST THINK IT OVER AND TALK TO THE PREACHER AND MINISTER BEFORE YOU MAKE ANY DECISIONS. GOD BLESS AND GOOD LUCK!

Do not believe that you MUST speak in tongues as proof of the Holy Spirit. Not all charisms of The Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues. Read your Bible. Pentecostals are strange. Why not go to the Church that Jesus started?
