An M1A1 Abrams (main battle tank for the US) weighs about 65 tons, or 130,000 lbs.
Hope that helps.

I agree with all the above answers, but I think your question is why do Jumbo jets weigh so much, but are not able to withstand any forces against them . That is, unlike a MBT they are unable to deflect any fire from another source, or even protect themselves from a "rough" landing. I, as a former tanker, used to wonder the same thing, until I realized that a Jumbo Jet was designed to go through one thing only.... the Air. hope this helps

Transport category aircraft (Airliners), range from 90,000 pounds for a small DC-9, all the way to to around 875,000 for a 747-400. Since an M1 Abrams weighs in between 120,000-130,000 pounds, the average jet weighs between 1 and 8 times as much as a tank.

Call it 50-65 tons for a modern main battle tank and around 400 tons for a 747 or up to 750 tons for an A-380.

Not sure what a military tank weighs but the Boeing 777-300 has an empty weight of 370,000 lbs.
