If you are getting robbed at an atm machine, is it true that if you enter your pin backwards, the police will be dispatched?

this is a myth. and not one that will work.

and what if your pin is like "4-4-4-4" ??? how would the ATM know to contact the police even if this were true?

No and to prove it someone out there probably has the same pin but backwards so it would mean that every time they put in their pin the police would come.

I doubt it. If I'm at an ATM and someone sticks a gun in my face I doubt I'd remember my pin frontwards, let alone backwards.

This is rubbish. Even if the police were dispatched, it would be too late to do you any good.
