my sister is 10 and my mom got her one for Christmas....i dont think that she's mature enough to have one...but it was my mothers decision, not mine. get her one on a trial basis maybe....like one of those you can get from wal-mart for $20 or $30 and then buy minuts to put on it. let the minuts be her allowance or part of it.

get her a cell phone!! you never know when there is going to be an emergency! it may really help her out!!
my 11 and 12 year old cousins have had their cell phones for 2 years now... they are responsible and don't go over their provided minutes!
when you are home with your daughter, take her cell phone so she will not be allowed to use it at home where there is a land line phone! only let her take it with her!
there are also cell phones where you can store only 20 phone numbers in the address book! the phone does nothing more than what a phone was intended to do in the first place! ONLY make and receive calls!! and the phone doesn't actually have the 1-9 numbered buttons,so she can only call the 20 or less people in her phone book! the phone is a called a Firefly! My 4 year old niece has had her for about 4 months now! pretty cool little phone!!

Go with your gut instinct. I didn't receive a cell phone until I was 16 years old, and I did fine until then. It could actually teach her more responsibility in the long run if she is a good child right now. When she is old enough to have a job, let her start paying for her own bill. For now, let her know her boundaries with the cell phone (when she can talk, how many minutes she is allowed to have, ect) Also, another good point is that she has no excuse in not letting you know where she is at all times. Some people disagree with a twelve year old with a cell phone, but if she deserves it, give it to her. Make sure that if you do get one, all of her time is not spent talkin on that dang phone, so her grades will begin to slip and her chores do not get left undone. Tell her of her responsibilities from the start, and you should be fine. You're her mother, you know best. Good luck.

I got a cell phone to use as an extra line in the house. I let my 12 year old use it when she is out of the house which is really only on weekends. We have a weeknight after 7 and unlimited weekend plan so all those minutes are included in one fee.

I agree with Jody. Those Disney cells look like they are great for a 12 y/o. If her grades are good and she is responsible, why not reward her? If she only wants it to fit in, then that is a way to boost her to feel that way. Even if she can only call you or 911, at least you know she can get in touch with you or the police if there is an emergency.

Well,my kids are good kids, they do chores(somtimes),and get a little allowance. But I dont have a cell phone and my excuse is if I dont have one they dont have one.I have friends with kids in the same age range and have had trouble showing their kid resopnsibility with having a cell phone.Just be prepared to see a high billing statement every month even if you get her alot of minutes.Kids get excited with cell phone and overuse them and their minutes, next thing you know you've got a $700.00 phone bill to pay! I've seen it with my friends, and they regret it.Twelve year old girls talk alot, remeber when you were 12. I told my sons that when they get a job and can pay their own bill they can get a phone, and their 14 and 15! So just be carful with your decision,I can almost guarentee she will overuse her mminutes and you'll se a big bill, then you'll have to cut allowance completely just to pay her bill.Good luck....

I don't think a 12 year old really needs a cell phone just yet. She just wants to fit in. When she gets older and starts going out and has more responsibilities then she should have one.

If she has good grades and is responsible than yes. Cell phones are REALLY useful in emergencys, and when she goes to parties, dances, out with friends, or stuff like that. So I say yes.
