my husbands sister (who helped raise him and calls our son her grandson), gave us a puppy for christmas last year...she said that our son (who was only 2 months old at the time) needed to grow up with a dog in his life. the problem was...i hate dogs, okay, i dont hate them...i just dont want one.....this puppy chewed up my sons new things (crib legs, swing, ect.), it pooped and peed everywhere, and was in general a nuscance (sp?). we ended up giving the dog away to the pound a couple of days after christmas. the real reason that they gave us the dog is b/c their dog had puppies and they couldn't keep them all. they have been kind-of distant this whole year and i was just sitting here thinking about it and remembered the dog....If you were in my situation...how would you have handled that?? Did i make them mad?? was i wrong to get rid of the dog??

a dog is a big responsibility, and you just had a baby! i think it was very thoughtless of her to give you this dog without checking with you first. i think i would have given it away myself. back to her, her "grandson" can visit "his" dog when he is over at her place. just try to make her understand your point of view, and if she doesn't, oh well. you tried.

It was wrong of them to give you a pet you didn't ask for. First, a dog, or any pet, requires constant care like a child. It is a big responsiblity, and that should NEVER be thrown onto a person without their asking for it.

Also, it is really silly that babies need to be raised with puppies. I've worked at shelters, and this is why so many dogs end up homeless. People don't realize how much work a puppy is, and new parents rarely have time to properly care for both. Naturally, the baby comes first, so the dog is given away. Puppies are too active and playful for babies.

I wish, though, that you had called the inlaws to say "We can't keep this puppy. Is there another home you would like us to put him?" I really hope the pound you went to was a no-kill shelter. If anything, this is the only part I would apologize for.

Not at all. They were totally wrong to give you a dog. Any time a pet is adopted, it needs to be to a home that has planned for it and has chosen it to be compatible to the home where it will live. Any place you go to read about animals, they will tell you never to give a pet as a gift, it is cruel to the animal and just rude to the people. Sounds like you were made a dumping ground for their unwanted puppy. I'll bet the dog had not even had all of its shots and worming! Around this time of year you can frequently read in magazines and newspapers about NEVER giving a pet as a gift.

They should have asked you before they gave you a puppy. They were wrong in giving you an animal with out you requesting one.

With that said, you should have called them before you gave the dog to the pound. That would have given them the chance to find it a different home before it had to go to a shelter.

If you are worried about the lack of contact, then you should call them and see if things can be talked over.

It was wrong and insensitive of them to give you an animal without asking you if it would be alright. People shouldn't give pets as gifts unless they know without a shadow of a doubt that its alright to do so.

Your sister-in-law deserves to be ticked off. I would have given her the dog to take home the day she brought it.
