My mom & step dad are wanting to adopt, but its so expensive. It ranges from like $20,000 to $50,000 if not more in some cases. Why does adoption cost so much? If it wasn't so expensive more kids would be able to have a good home!

tell them to start doing foster care. They will get a baby faster than they can turn around. You will have a baby in foster care first but then when they go for adoption you can be the first to put in to adopt the baby. I did this myself and my daughter is now 15.

I would totally agree! It's the agencies that charge so much, but there is really alot more to it than just picking out a child. International adoptions is I am assuming what you are talking about, bc I have never heard of this price range in the states. This also includes most of the travel. We are going through our local Health and Human Services, so our adoption will be free. We also get "reimbursed" from the state a mere 210 dollars a month...which doesn't nearly cover the cost of raising a child. The problem with going through your state or any "public" adoption is that most of the kids are older 6+ and some are special needs children. We are lucky though, we will soon find out if we are going to get to adopt a little boy who has been with us almost a year (age 5). He is so great!

It doesn't always cost that much. If you are willing to take a child from the foster care system the costs can be minimal. Contact local agencies and ask them about adopting out of the foster care system. And the reason for the high costs for some adoptions have to do with the paying of prenatal care during the gestational stage*if you are looking for an infant* and other paper work, leg work, or overseas adoption costs. *overseas costs are fairly high like that so I am not sure if that is where you got the cost from?*

I think one reason adoption costs so much is because they want to make sure that the people who adopt the kids REALLY want them. If everyone could afford to adopt kids as bad as it sounds some people would and then just use them to work in their stores watch their others kids etc...

However in most states -not all- they recently passed a law were you get like 80 -90% of the money back when you file your taxes?? I know it's that way here but I am not sure where your parents are located

it is outrageous. But, remember that you do get a $10,000 per child tax credit the following year on a child that you adopt. So, that helps out a lot. I have looked in to adopting from Ethiopia and it cost all together around $10,000. Adopting in the U.S. is also much much cheaper because you don't have to go overseas for up to 6 or 8 weeks. Also, adopting from Ethiopia, you only have to be in the country for 2 days so that helps too. They should look at all of the countries and compare. I don't know why it costs so much either. My mom would love to adopt a child but like you said, she can't afford the several thousand dollars.

I checked on adopting a child..they wanted $10.000 down just to do the home study, reference check, background check, etc. The IF I passed all that, I would have to pay the other 30,000. I do understand you may get part of it back on taxes but if you don't have the money to adopt in the first place, that doesn't do any good. It's like everything else..it's a money making business..it's terrible to say that but it's true. You are basically buying a kid. For the money it takes to get one, you could pay for college for over a year for them. I don't think they really care about whether the kids have homes or not..they just want the money.

I have a friend who has decided to adopt after he and his wife tried for 6 years to have a baby of their own. they were originally looking at 50,000 to adopt, but have decided to do a "foster-to-adopt" program instead which is a little bit more reasonable.

I have no idea why adoption is so expensive, unless you look at it from the standpoint of a regular birth without insurance. If a person got pregnant, and went to every appointment, and delivered in the hospital, all without any insurance of any kind, then the bill would probably be similar to that of adoption.

I think insurance ought to foot the bill for some of it...

Tell your mom and step dad good luck from me!

With the Freddie Mac Foundation, is much better than private adoption. If they get on the foster parent's list first, it's much easier. and the national adoption center has over 500,000 USA children right now....and that cost you say is for private adoption...not regular through these organizations.

And it is a very great idea, I just met 25 of them...and each one deserves a good home where people want them....the children...5 years old and up are now considered harder to place..NO UNWANTED CHILDREN, JUST UNFOUND FAMILIES.

Do they have to have an infant? Go to your state's department of children and families website and you can find a list of kids (infants, toddlers, and children) who are in need of adoption. It usually costs a lot less and the kids really need good homes.

I agree. thats y many people go to other poorer countries to adopt. and then people get upset when they children in our country are left in orphanges and foster care for 18 years. I is very silly acctually but what are you gunna do. thats just how our country works. they are greedy and not even helping children have a nice home, loving parents and a good life will change that.
