This Swiss artist lived and died in an asylum, but what did he suffer from?

I think he lived (and died) a little too early for a correct and detailed diagnosis of his mental illness to have been recorded.

The biographies I have accessed for him go no further than saying he was mentally ill, insane or suffered from a psychosis.

Sorry I can't be more help.

The main problem was his family, he just wanted to drop out of the rat race, live as a gardener - traveller. But they shipped him into a old age peoples home at Ballaigues, where he was driven to dispair over 19 years. His eyesight and hands were a problem in his later life, but he was eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia.
