As far as I know,a skin tag can't be "cured" or prevented. They are hereditary. But they can be removed by a doctor very easily with almost no mark left behind.

There is no way to prevent skin tags. Your doctor can cut them off with sharp scissors, a sharp blade or, less commonly, by freezing or burning them off at the stalk. Bleeding can be stopped with a chemical (aluminum chloride) or electric (cauterizing) treatment which can hurt and leave a scar. Skin tag removal is considered a cosmetic problem so only the best insurance will pay for their removal. Average Doctor's fees for removing skin tags is now upwards of $250.00

I will be having my 42nd birthday this summer, and began getting some skin tags a year or so ago. Just this week I went to my dermatologist for a skin check-up and skin tag removal. I asked why we have them, the nurse said it's mostly due to our genes. So some people have them, and some don't have them. They tend to be only in areas that have friction from clothes, and yes, they will multiply. Having mine removed was very simple, and painless. I encourage you to see a dermatologist and get rid of them ASAP, you'll feel better about yourself.

Here is two ways to rid yourself of them. First - you can simply put a rubber band around them and leave them till them dry and fall off - they lose the blood flow to the tag - The second way - which I have personally had great luck with - is to simply take a very hot hair dryer and aim directly at the skin tag - you will have to do this several times before it goes totally away - but trust me, I had them on both sides of my neck (almost in a line) - under my arms (sort of tender) - and even on my thigh

Lasers can take them out. Hot knife was used at one time.
Good personal habits and hygiene will reduce the incidence to some extent.
