I just put in my processor and am about to power up but the manual to the motherboard goes on about bios updates and settings and stuff. Isnt it better to just put in the windows disc?

first tip mate, you should never mess around with b.i.o.s(basic input output system),as this is the central nervous system of the whole p.c,however you need to set your first bootable device to cd/dvd-rom (this will be located in advanced bios options) and remember to save and exit set-up
with regards to updates and settings, they will be talking about bios updates(flash),and these wont be needed at this stage, just continue with your windows xp installation and once completed ,install the chipset drivers that came with your motherboard(or even better get the latest from the mobo,s makers website)
good luck

If it is not set to boot from cd drive as the first boot device, then you will have to enter the bios and change boot order/boot priority, couple of examples there you might see in the boot sequence set up page.

Most cases no but once windows is installed see if there is a bios update if you are having any hardware issues. For the most part if it aint broke don't fix it.

The general rule is: don't play with bios updates/upgrades unless things don't work properly.

So I say install your Windows OS. You should be okay.
