I personally use a very think layer. Some cats do like to dig, dig, dig in it and get everything covered. I just think that too much will retain odors for a long time and require frequent emptying and cleaning.

Covered litterboxes aren't really good for cats. We do things like that for our benefit. To the cat, who is much more sensitive to odors than we are, the odors in a covered box become too concentrated and may result in doing "business" elsewhere in your house.

We have 4 cats, two litter boxes, we use about 3 inches, clean out clumps once daily and thoroughly dump once a week.

I fill it up about halfway. That way, when she uses it, she doesn't dig all the way to the bottom and make the litter less effective. (If there is no litter lining a spot and she uses that spot, it is messy to clean up.)

clumping litter..at least three to four inches...dependent on the number of kitties using the box..they love to dig..give them a chance to do so...

You're supposed to put in enough to cover the whole bottom of the box but not so much that it buries their paws when they get in it.
