It isn't a good idea to take animals from the wild. I would let that little guy go. If she likes caterpillars, have you heard of a velvet worm? They look caterpillar-like, but are larger and much more fun; you can also buy captive-bred specimens. They can be hard to get hold of, but you can find them occasionally, or you can also order them online. Here's a link for you to read up:

If your daughter keeps the caterpillar, I would recommend keeping it in as large a cardboard box as you have room for
and placing a green branch with lots of leaves in the box. Go to where she found the caterpillar and see what kind of leaves
the caterpillars are eating. Chances are, there will be plenty of the creatures and the leaves will be perforated from excessive
caterpillar dining.
If she is lucky, she can keep several caterpillars in the box and some will make cocoons. At any rate, keep an eye on the trees
around where she found the caterpillar for any cocoons. Sometimes you can see the butterflies or moths emerging in the springtime.

I notice no body paid attention when they took Biology.
Caterpillars change into Butterflies come spring. Her pet would be short lived. They eat leaves and other insects. Your are changing natures program by taking it out of the yard.

well yes she can have a catarpillar as a personal pet....but keeping this very sensitive pet requires high attention and care because these things are really sensitive and are not familiar with any human or human made modern way of life...so u have to feed catarpillar a fresh piece of green leaf any type and requires air and sunlight couple of times a day..make sure u choose really clean and air flow type of container for your small cute pet!!!!!

leavy stuff!

Keep in mind to leave small holes in the jar or box keeping in for proper ventilation ....

Keep in mind that many turn into beautiful butterflys!

Maybe as beautiful as that one you have who cares to share her love!
