Why would you do that? My dog is far beyond puppy years, but he's fed twice a day. It's better for them. They're also a lot less likely to get bloat (which is often fatal) or end up yakking after they eat an entire day's food at once.

It depends on the type of puppy - if it is a large breed - then they are still growing and I would feed 2 times a day until at least a year.
If it is a smaller dog - then he is mostly grown and you can go to once a day if you like.
Once they are adults - pick what fits best for your schedule - I feed my dogs 2 times per day because my schedule is crazy, they definitely eat in the a.m. unless I am competing, then I don't want them too full. Sometimes at night I am teaching a class and don't get home til late, or the dogs are with me as demo dogs. Wild dogs (wolves) eat when they can sometimes not for a few days. So - pick what works for you!

Who told you? I would ask the puppy's vet. Kittens are fed three to four times a day when young. Maybe that doesn't apply to puppies and it doesn't seem like an active youngster should have to wait all day for his food.
I know that grown dogs usually are fed once a day. And I am certainly against food being left out all day for any animal. Still I would think a puppy would be happier with more than one meal.

Sorry, I'd have to disagree on feeding the puppy once a day. I was always told that puppies should have ample food and water until they turn at least one year old.
When my puppy turned 12 months, I began feeding her in the evenings....particulary around my own dinner time. She now comes to know when I began cooking dinner....she sits at the kitchen threshhold licking her chops and looking down at her empty bowl and back at me.
It gives me a break during dinner (less begging when she is full) and we both enjoy that time of evening.
Good Luck and let pup eat as much as she'd like!

Where is the pup staying? Does he have room to romp around, safe toys to chew on, and will the friend be able to spend some time during that one visit? I wouldn't recommend leaving a pup this age alone all day with just one visit per day. If he has had his shots (he is old enough to have had them now) he could be boarded at a Vet's where he will have the stimulation of other animals and people around him and get some exercise, plenty of food and water that he needs each day. Either that, or maybe one person stay home with him. Even though there are feeders that time release food, this pup will need people around more than a few minutes or an hr. out of a whole 24 hr day.

I got my Tibetan Spaniel puppy at 6 months old, and the breeder suggested feeding him 2 times per day at the very least. My vet and the trainer I was working with agreed with her statement.
I don't think it would hurt her to be fed once per day. But, if she starts vomiting up unchewed food, or seems to have digestion problems split it up into two feedings.

Puppies really ought to be fed twice a day at least, I feed mine three times, the younger they are the more they should be fed, even as adults most dogs are fed twice daily. Double check with someone else professional about this because I seriously doubt you were told correctly

It's better for digestion to feed twice a day.
Feeding one big meal causes Bloat. That's where the stomach and intestines turn over on themselves, kink off blood vessels and start dying. Once that happens, the dog goes from fine and dandy to dead within hours.
To prevent this, feed 2 smaller meals.
Cheers.

You may want to pick the time where there is a window of opportunity to leave them out to go potty so it is more comfortable for them. If you leave them locked up for a long time after eating there is more chance for accidents. I actually feed my dogs twice a day but give them smaller portions. How would you like to only be fed once a day?

i would feed the puppy at least twice a day, the second time a couple of hours before bed time so he'll have time to go to the bathroom before you guys go to sleep. he/she's still a puppy (young) and just using common knowledge i assume it needs more nutricion than being fed once a day. puppies/kids have lots of energy and need lots of good nutricion and fuel to burn off all that energy.
