Hey guys, I bought some urine dipsticks and have been checking my urine because I'm prone to infections. Anyways, there was no sign of infection but it looked like there were ketones in my urine! Today i checked again and it's negative this time. Does it matter what time of the day you check, do ketones only go in your urine after you eat a big meal or something? What does this mean?

Ketonuria is caused by burning of fats as in starvation or diabetes. You may have read the color wrong.

Ketones in the urine (ketonuria) occur when sugar is not being provided or utilized as the body's source of energy, and fat has to be broken down to create sugar. They can occur if you are fasting or your diet does not contain adequate carbohydrates or sugar; or they can occur if the body is unable to utilize the sugar that is present (diabetes). Ketones in the urine are not alarming. But they need to be explained as they can be a sign of problems, such as diabetes. Check your urine again after eating a balanced meal. If they persist you should see a doctor for further evaluation.

It can mean you may have diabetes, or it can mean you just have a high protein or low carb. diet. Or you might have ketones that are in the normal range.

Does the test give any indications of what the ketone levels are? If it does, click below to see where you fall on the scale near the bottom of that page.

Ketones indicate that your body is burning fat instead of sugar for energy. If someone is on the Atkins diet they tend to have ketones in their urine b/c they are not eating any carbs/sugars and therefore are buring fat. Diabeitcs may have ketones as well, they need to be carefull b/c they can go into ketoacidosis (b/c thier body cannot process sugar). As for you, as long as you don't have ketones in your urine again don't worry about it. Those test strips are not always accurate as there are sometimes interferring substances in urine. If you test positive again you could see your doctor just to be safe.
