Where are you coming from, and do you need a direct flight? These are two important questions, because the airlines that serve your airport may be different from the airlines that serve the airports that I'm familiar with.
That said...for a flight from California to Hawaii, ATA/Southwest is currently the cheapest, followed by Hawaiian Airlines. Aloha, United, and Continental are super duper expensive. A nonstop flight from San Diego to the Big Island is now going for around $800 R/T; with one connection, $650. I'm not sure where you're coming from, so I can't give you a specific answer. But I've found that booking directly with the airlines tends to be cheaper than going through Expedia, Travelocity, etc. since the airlines don't charge separate booking fees. Hawaiian is usually the cheapest for me, but that's only because I don't like connections. If you are willing to make connections and are near Oakland, or willing to fly through Oakland, you may get a good deal from Southwest/ATA.

If you are departing from the west coast it would likely be Hawaiian Airlines and possibly ATA. (Hawaiian has better service)
