It really depends on the cause. You need to get XRays to determine if it's a disc problem.
You definitely need to ice it. You can alternate ice and MOIST heat to work the muscles out without strain. Take Motrin as it is an anti-inflammatory. DO NOT use a heating pad.

As stated above, please DON'T see a chiropractor, they are dangerous practicing medicine and they do so much long term damage and get away with it because of the medical liability release they make you sign in their office.

A heating pad and some Motrin works wonders. But you need to find the cause of what is causing your back pain. Was this from an injury, or did it happen during your period/ovulation? If it's hurting you constantly you probably need a stronger narcotic pain medication but most importantly to have an x-ray to and an examiniation to determine it's cause.

It is really impossible to cure. Ask your doctor to refer you to a physical therapist to learn some exercises and stretches to help strengthen your back once they have ruled at skeletal issues. When you do stretch, use ice NEVER HEAT to help with any discomfort. Heat loosens the muscles, but does not allow them to strengthen and support your back properly. Heat packs are good if you have a cramp, but not for chronic back pain.

Try mild treatments, but nothing too extreme. If that does not help, see a doctor, especially if you also have pain down one or both of your legs.

try cracking your back... if not a heating pad usually works really good... and if you have one, sit in a hottub or something like that for like 20 min with the jets running against ur back... it really helps.. or have a friend massage your lower back or something like that... oh and the vibrating massagers work alot too....
