All plants need sunlight for the process of photosynthesis, which is one of the ways the get their "food." Therefore, no green plant will grow in a dark cellar.

They need the light to nourish the cloroform (gives it the green color) which in turn begins a process that allows the plant to process the nourishment it recieves from the nutrients in the soil. Take away light, this process doesn't happen.

Primary requirements for all autotrophs is sunlight, water and air (carbondioxide as well as oxygen). Remove one of these factors and the plant will either not grow at all, or have poor growth.
