There's little way to know, since primitive man hasn't been around to ask for a long time.
But there are tradeoffs to everything, you know. Was primitive man better off sleeping in caves that lions trolled into looking for dinner? Not really.
Is modern man better off walking around in irradiated air? Not really.
Was primitive man better off beginning to formulate thoughts and attempting to express himself to his friends without having the full scope of language yet available? Maybe not.
Is modern man better off, having a full scope of language, to the extent that words don't really point to what people actually mean anymore? Probably not.
And so forth.

Uhhh for what reason were they better off? Since this is in the religion section, I can only assume you mean because religion was non-existent or unimportant or something to that matter. Well the earliest humans, oddly enough, were buried carefully and often with their possessions, indicating that from the beginning of humanity, they believed in an afterlife where your life continues on. From a negative perspective, that COULD be bad because they buried important and useful objects sometimes which could have been used by the living. So in that case, no the primitives were not better off - they were in the same position we are in today.

He died young and often violently but he lived a full life close to nature without the stresses of modern day living. In some respects I envy him.

in a sense yes and in a sense no. we have modern conveniences and medicine which help us live longer but then there are a lot of stresses which modern societies place upon individuals and several people escape to the outdoors to live for a brief period of time the way their ancestors did.

No laws. Meaning the strong can do what they want. Doesn't seem like fun.
