i think the Statue of Liberty stands for the legal process not the illegal process.
If you want to stay do it the legal way.

First off, the whole Mexican immigration issue is all over the news because the vast majority of illegal immigrants enter our country via the Mexican/American border. This doesn't mean that all illegal immigrants are Mexicans, there are people from various other countries around the world that come to Mexico in order to enter America illegally. Why? Because it's public knowledge that if you have the drive, resources and connections, you can sneak into America through this particular border. That being said, what's to stop a terrorist cell from sneaking into our country and wreaking havoc on our native soil? Our only defense to this is to build a fence along the border in its entirety, recruit more Border Patrol and tighten up our laws regarding immigration.
So who is to blame? Well, our government is strongly to blame considering they've allowed this "back door" to remain open for so long. Personally, I also blame the government of Mexico for its petty corruption and failure to maintain quality of life in its own country; it's a shame the Mexican people would rather die trying to enter America than live in Mexico.
Lastly, the only Americans that are immigrants are those that were born in another country; the rest of us born here are natives... get it straight! And the Statue of Liberty is a symbol of legal immigration, not criminal trespassing!!

I don't blame the illegals for being here, I blame the government for not setting the laws necessary to keep them from having rights to our benefits at the taxpayers(American Citizens) expense. Why does every one keep comparing the illegals to past immigrants? Let me explain something. Past immigrants had a whole different meaning for immigrating to this country, and they did it legally. The past immigrants came here because they wanted to be citizens of a country that they believed in and they believed for what it stands for. They learned our language and didn't try to force their way of life upon the American people, but tried to adapt to our way of life. they did not exploit our school systems, welfare, and medical benefits at the taxpayers' expense. These immigrants today don't want to become citizens, they like being able to take what they can for their own advantage. They also think that we should be learning their language instead of the other way around. All these feelings would not be what they are if the illegals had not held those protests demanding rights from a country they are in illegally. Do you know how the whole protest thing started? If not then I'll tell you. It started with a bunch of high school kids that were looking for a reason to ditch school and protest. So let me ask you something. What's the difference in illegals complaining about having rights and American citizens complaining about them being here? Answer that and you have my blessing.

Certainly it makes little sense to blame Mexicans as a people....but yes, blame placed on the government of Mexico seems appropriate.
Controlling immigration, both legal and illegal is up to governments and not privates citizens.
And regrading your comment that most of us are decedents of immigrants lets try to also remember that for the most part we came here legally.
My family fled France (can you imagine!) and settled in what would become the US back in 1708. We (meaning Marie and her 7 sons; the 1st family member) went to England first in 1707, secured land from William Penn and were allow to come to the colonies; Pennsylvania....
So under the immigration rules of the time we did arrive legally. And since the Statue of Liberty is merely a symbol...from our buddies the French, its return to France would have no impact on me personally. Also, we export good & products (yes and now jobs), we deport people including illegal immigrants.
A note to Mintee...yes, you are correctthat anyone living on the North American Continent is an American. But if you travel outside the NA to Europe, the middle east, Africa and such the USA is known and called America by 99.9% of the people. At least that has been my experience when I traveled to those places. I have been called a "colonial" a couple of times in England however.

No, let's blame everybody but the people committing the crime.
Why is it so hard to understand the word illegal? It is not that big of a word and pretty darn basic in it's definition.
Immigrating is fine done legally- illegal immigration is just that against the law.
I hate to point out the obvious as adults we make our own decisions daily, just like those illegal aliens make the decision everyday to enter this country illegally. And to think they are so dense we are going to have to build a wall to keep them from breaking the law- do we really want people like that in this country? Do we need more criminals in this country- isn't our prison system full?

You are missing the point. The issue is not immigrants coming here from Mexico, the issue is ILLEGAL immigrants coming here from Mexico. There is a difference!!!
Most Americans have no problems with people coming to this country to make a better life for themselves, as you said most of us are immigrants. But we did it the proper way -- learned to Speak English, adapted to the American way of life and became US Citizens!!

wow, you sound ridiculous. No we shouldn't blame anyone for immigrating. Immigration is encouraged by most. We should blame the people who cross the border unlawfully.
Educate yourself about immigration and why there is a process for it.
The statue of liberty is referring to LEGAL immigrants. Why do you think it is in NY? The immigrants who were coming LAWFULLY could see it.

Anyone who commits a crime is at fault for that crime and shouldn't blame anyone else. No one forced illegal immigrants at gunpoint to move here. 99% of Americans are immigrants? Where are you getting this statistic from? I was born here and so were my parents and my grandparents and I could go farther back than that. I believe that makes me a citizen and not an immigrant.
The statue of liberty was a symbol for immigration at Ellis Island where people came legally. They went through processing.

Sure blame them I say... I am Mexican, I was born in Chiapas Mexico....
I think you should blame them, blame the for being hungery, and poor.. Blame them for wanting to better their lives.... Blame them for trying ot make money, since their Goverment doesn't do much to better the lives of the poor... Blame them for doing what has been done for hundreds of years, meaning penilze them for crossing the line between two countries that once wasn't there.... Blame them for bieng poor, I mean come on guys really, look at how easy it is for a Saudi to get in compared to a mexican, Legally... It's easier for them to get legal passage here, then it is for Mexicans, or Latin Americans, it's all in where the oil comes from... Lots of our oil is from the Saudi's so go figure..... And you wouldn't wait for your kids and family to go hungry while the proccess was in full swing... There are waiting lists of Mexicans who want to get legal status... Of course you won't hear that, but My parents had to wait three years to bring me here, when the adopted me.. Three years, they could go anywhere else in the world but the U.S.. America is great, but lets not forget where we came from.... All of us, for the most part are had ancestors who came here from some other part of the world... With the exception of Indians.. But even they came from somwhere else at some point... So, yes it's wrong for them to come here without legal paperwork, but lets try to make it a bit easier so they can at least feel like its worth the try.. And we can keep track of them better if we did that, more of them would be in the system... Maybe thats not the way, Maybe we should beat them and send them back bloodied and torn, since thats the only way you are going to slow them, is to beat them sensless and then send them back as an example.... I doubt many of you would let your family starve... Maybe you would I don't know its hard to tell people are so fickle!
So I have said enough for now, I can't believe I actualy wrote this... I usually don't respond to these types of questions.. But it was a good question...

We should not "blame" Mexicans for immigrating, however we should blame our government for not controlling the immigration.
Like others, I too am a decendent from immigrants. They came to this country as endentured servants (coal miners) and had to work off their passage to the U.S. While they worked off their passage, they paid income taxes to the United States.
Also, I have sponsored 100s of immigrants from various countries (some of which actually became U.S. citizens).
It is wrong to come to the US without doing so legally. They are creating competition for US citizens for jobs, they are costing tax payers alot of money and they are disrupting our schools. Being illegal they do not pay taxes and often work under the table. This is taking jobs from citizens who are legal and do pay taxes.
