He did not come to abolish the law, if you read carefully and prayerfully you will notice that He magnifies the law - Ten Commandments - He said that if you think it in your mind you sin already when first time it would be doing the action like committing adultery then you would be committing sin he now says that if you even think it in your heart. God's law His perfect and doesn't need to be changed or abolish if you read 1 John 3 you will see that sin is the transgression of God's law. I would invite you to visit the link below to study more.

He's explaining it, since the Israelites were basically riding "the short bus" when it came to interpreting God's will at the time. Much like most Christians today for that matter.
God would tell the prophets "Love God, love your neighbor, take care of the poor and seek to do justice" and the average worshiper would hear "Stone adulterers and use 2 sets of dishes. And don't touch unclean things or people."
Christ's role was to be a clear mediator of what God expected from us, all other scripture should be judged based on what Jesus said.

Jesus came to fulfill the sentence of the law -- to take our place.
The punishment for sin was still death. That never changed. The only difference was that he was the one who would die. So, the law was never abolished. It was brought full-circle, from proclaimation to violation to punishment.

He did not come to change the law of man but to present the Law of God.
Law of Man is what convicted Him and nailed Him to the cross but the Law of God is what confirmed the Word and His resurrection and will His return.

Jesus came to fulfill the law by doing what no one else was able to do. He lived his life without breaking any laws of Moses' or man's. He was the only one that could do that.

I never understood how anyone can "fulfill' the law. The Mosaic law was set down as a eternal covenant between G-d and the nation of Israel. how can anyone fulfill that is beyond me.

In my humble opionion I think that because the people of his time were under the impression that he was trying to change the religion of their fathers and also because they didn't want someone to bring them somthing new he was saying in a very subtle and deep way that his mission was to complement, not to discard or reject what Moses had taught.
