One good video player is Media Player Classic:

It is free, open source, and works well with (and is often included in) codec packs which allow you to play many different media types.

You don't say what operating system you are using, but Windows Media Player is installed with XP and can play a wide range of media.
Though if you want to get the best from a DVD (surround sound, etc) I think that a dedicated DVD player will give you a better result than using an ordinary PC setup, because it has digital signal processing hardware dedicated to the job.

Download free winamp....brilliant media player i much prefer it to windows media player http://www.winamp.com/ it plays AVI and loads of other audio/video formats

Depends on the codec that you need to play that video. Most of the latest ones are DivX and XViD. These can be downloaded at the following sites:
