Well, you can buy a legal copy and report the vendor that sold you a bad copy.

If possible, get a 'volume licensed' edition because that does not attempt to validate itself. It was designed for coporations with many computers so that their IT guys don't have to validate every computer throughout a large organisation. You simply install, enter serial and it works. No 30 day validation junk to worry about. The only issue is that windows updates don't always work because MS doesn't always identify volume licensed as legitimate windows.

I can't speak for Media Centre

Yes, you can contact Microsoft during the validation process and report where you got your invalid copy of Windows. From there, Microsoft will file a lawsuit against the company that you got your copy of Windows from and they will give you a valid copy of Windows as well as Retail box, etc... FREE! If you do not wish to disclose this information to Microsoft, they will give you the option to purchase a license from them. Also, without Genuine Windows software, your computer will become more vulnerable to Virus' and security issues as you will be unable to download or install updates from Microsoft. Remember, software piracy is illegal!!!
