I have a new plasma and am looking into the xbox 360 hd-dvd player. Will the movies have the black wide-screen bars on them? I know basically every HDTV is in 16:9 so will the movie be that way also.

There are a few different types of widescreen movies unfortunately, and depending on the movie will depend on if the black bars show up or not. If you see anamorphic on the DVD then it should fit no problem, there will be others however that may have thin black lines still. If the XBOX DVD allows for HDMI connectivity some TV brands do an auto-format so that it fits no matter what, that's on new Panasonic sets now, and others coming down the pipe.

You are actually more likely to see black bars top and bottom on HD DVD discs. In order to fit widescreen movies to fill the HDTV aspect ratio, either sides have to be cropped or the "pan-and-scan" approach used. That is why many current DVDs show the black bars; they want to avoid this degradation of the original material. There will be even more pressure to avoid tampering with the movies in HD DVD, since that is supposed to be more like the theater experience. I expect that nearly all HD DVDs (both formats) will be presented in OAR (original aspect ratio), i.e. the way the film was made.

besides the undeniable fact that that is an argument of discussion, there are diverse that trust that the upconverting DVD participant will do an more advantageous interest than the television. the numerous income of HDMI is that that is all digital and also you avert the conversions occupied with getting ingredient alerts. yet that is authentic no matter if you pick 480 (time-honored definition format) or a 720p or 1080i (severe definition format) because the output of your participant. after all, any enormous difference might want to be small, because no matter in the journey that your set reflects 1080p, the image on the (time-honored DVD) disc is purely 480 lines, and also you won't be able to strengthen on that determination. besides the undeniable fact that, in making the conversion, no matter if it isn't done nicely, the image can become worse. So that is an argument of which unit does an more advantageous interest: the television or the DVD participant, and the purely thanks to make sure is to study comments in severe-end magazines (like Widescreen review) or flow to the AVS communicate board for discussions on the particular gamers.

Yes the bars are going to show but they are going to be very small. Movies have different aspect ratio than HDTVs do. HDTVs aspect ratio is 1: 77.1 and most movies aspect ratios come in 1: 85.1 and 2: 35.1.
