I'm not sure about giving him any homeopathics b/c they may not interact well with the anesthetic drugs he will be given. (he might get sick)
Some exercise is okay as long as he doesn't overdo it. Take him out for leash walks at least a couple times a day, at least for the first week. This will let him burn off some excess energy, but you will be in control of how much he can play & run around. It is advisable to keep him from jumping as much as you can until the incision is healed.
I agree that keeping him in his crate all day would not be fun for him or you. Especially with an e-collar on, it is difficult to maneuver in a crate with those on. When you are gone you might want to consider confining him to a small room, bathroom or someplace where he can't really run & jump around, but he has a little more space than a crate provides. Set it up nice with a bed, water, chew toys, a radio on, etc. This will hopefully make him & you a little happier.
Another good idea is to ask your vet what kind of sutures they will be using. Ask if he can get surgical tissue glue instead of external stiches. This will be much more comfortable for him, he won't be tempted (as much) to lick at his incision site, and you won't have to return to the vet's office to get stiches removed, & the surgery site usually heals faster.
Always consult your vet with any questions you might have. They are the absolute experts & they have your pet's best interest at heart.

DON'T be too sure that he won't try to run and play just because he is a male right after surgery. My male dobe came out of the vet office - same day - dragging me to the car leaping around. And acted like his normal self. Of course - he has no regard for his own personal safety and has a high pain threshold. BUT - the point is - it is up to you to make sure he doesn't run and play. Get quiet games for him to play - buy a kong and feed all his meals in it as he will play with this to get the food out. Most important is to take him outside on leash for the first few days - he can run then.
OH - and P.S. - the dog cannot control the food you give him - if anybody's dog gained weight after surgery it is because of the owners. More exercise- more food. Less exercise - less food. Just like people - simple. I have had lots of dogs, show, compete train - and they all kept their personalities -nobody is fat or lazy. They don't have money or thumbs....I control the food

since it is a he, there is no problem. The surgery is very minor. The first couple of days he will be quite calm because of the anaesthesia and discomfort anyway. But there is no risk from running etc. The only risk is if he bites the stitches and cuts them, so if he does that, maybe he has to wear an elizabethan collar for 2-3 days.

He will heal faster than you think. Not to mention that any pain he feels is good, as it will keep him doing only what he is capable of doing without hurting himself (which is why vets generally don't prescribe take home pain meds).
Just do what you can on keeping him calm, especially the first 48 hours after sx. Watch for any excessive redness, swelling, discharge or unusual lethargy. He'll be just fine!

Oxyfresh makes a product called "Mellow Out." I give it to my corgi before I vaccuum otherwise she goes berserk. It is homeopathic, and has soothing herbs in it that will not have any bad side effects on your pet. Ask your vet about it. There are also treats for relaxing your dog, like chewies called "Anti-Stress Sticks." They are sold at dog.com

I just wanted to say thank you for asking this question. I was signing in today to ask the same thing about my border collie pup that is getting neutered next week, obviously he is a very active little guy also.
good luck to you and your pup.
