My Westie is a male, 4 months old. Due to the long period of work schedule I am thinking about getting a second dog for his companion... just not sure what will be a good choice.

Pugs are generally dog friendly and laid back (Not that they aren't playful - laid back as in easy going around other animals)
They do shed, etc. so do some research - and remember if you are having a problem with training your Westie - try to fix those problems first or the 2nd dog might mimic his behavior.

A pug has a similar temperment to a westie; very amenable to other animals, and playful. Pugs are not yappy either. They are the same size as a westie, and will add a fun element to the household since both are playful breeds.

You could try a dachshound (sp?) as well. They are also playful, but I think they can get yappy.

If I were you I would get another westie because they are really just the best dogs in the world! :)

Along with the fact that "companion" breeders almost never health test, how does one show which animals are good companions. Dogs who are shown are exposed to stangers, other dogs, noise, stress, and just about everything else you can throw at them so the breeder has a better idea of how the dogs react to various stimuli. To aquire your foundation are you willing to go anywhere? I mean, most show people aren't lucky enough to have a top breeder living next door. So, to obtain their dogs they often have to fly to another state or even another country. How will you have the dogs evaluated? I mean, will you be doing the evaluation or will you have several third party individuals compare your dog's personality against that of other dogs in order to pick the best one? How will you pick the correct mate? If you are breeding towards the standard it's easier because you can "see" the dog and you can study the pedigree by seeing the ancestors. However, you can't really see personality unless you've met the dog at a show a few times.
