You didn't state whether your were male/female, but basic training will get you in shape. To prepare beforehand give yourself 6 weeks, Basic Training is only about 8 weeks (but very strenuous). I went into the Army not being able to run a mile without stopping to catch me breath, but after basic I was able to complete my 2-mile run in 16:30. There is a site that will tell you the required minimums for your sex and age (www.armybasic.org) and click on the age range under your sex. During basic you must score at least a 60 to pass, but after basic you are required to score at least a 75 (or 80, I forgot). If you go into basic being able to do the minimum you'll leave acing the PT Test. A high score on your PT Test does count when it's time for promotion to the next rank. Good Luck!!!

The Army will put you through their own fitness programme when you join up. They may also give you their own fitness diet, and if it's anything like the fitness diet I had during para training, it isn't so bad. We were given chips with everything. Good luck in your army career. You will get the best military and trade trainingas well as the best mates in the world.

I'm an army veteran. Try doing this every other day: Do 200 good push-ups in 1 hour, 200 sit-ups in 1 hour and run 3 miles (preferably uphill - it'll help you in the ruck marches). If you can do all of the above, then you'll do fine, physically, in the Army.

First, if you are a runner already..great. If not start now. You need to be able to run two miles and do it in decent time. Then practice the push-ups and sit-ups and get good at those. If you are not at optimum weight, you can work on that. Basic will finish whipping you into shape so you do not have to go in in perfect condition. But the more fit you are the easier basic will be.
Good luck!

If you can run a mile in 6-7 minutes you will be OK. You could get hold of a Royal Marines fitness video, that will set you on the right track.

6 months, of good running, not fast but extend distance over every week to about 10/15 miles for stamina.
Good eating no heavy meals. Muscle toning/weights not for body building but for toning of the muscles. Moderate alcohol. Smoke? give it up.
