Ok, I'd say you first have to get your game to a level where you are near or at par. Usually, breaking 80 consistently on 18 holes will do it.
Next, you have to pass the PAT, or Player Ability Test. You have to go out, shoot a certain number on 36 holes of golf. If you pass, you are considered an apprentice.
Next, you need to work at a course for a while as an apprentice, learning the tricks of the trade: regrips, reshafts, basic greens work, scheduling and scoring tournaments, etc. Once you have 30 credits, or 30 months of work, you move to the next phase.
Past this, I get a bit cloudy. You need to put together some sort of portfolio of golf information, and present it to a panel of USGA certified pros. Once that is completed, you are classified as a certified PGA pro.
Now, if you want to get on tour, you need to win a major 'open' tourney, or pass Q school, or qualifying school.
For more information, I would suggest the book 'Paper Tiger,' about a regular 15 handicap trying to become a pro.

Well the process of becoming a pro is different based on what type of pro you want to be. Anybody who wants to be a pro can be a pro. You simply label yourself a pro, and you are a pro. Obviously, you are not a PGA pro yet, or even a touring pro. Those all take requirements and achieving certain levels. If you want to be a PGA pro at a local golf course, each state has a similar program. The tests involve your ability to play and teach and facilitate the game.
There are also some local events you can sign up for with achieving a certain handicap as a pro. The things is, all that matters is what you consider a pro.

I don't become a golf pro, I'm an amateur.
How could YOU become a golf pro? Quit your job and play golf for a living. You'll either become a pro or a corpse.

I believe our friend here is referring to becoming a teaching professional, not a playing professional. Go to pga.com and look for the link. They give instruction and certify teaching professionals.
