The Apostles and Christians have been beheaded, crucified, beaten to death, and otherwise tortured. God's protection is eternal to those who have put their trust in him. Jesus said, "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul:" (Matt. 10: 28 ) Let's not blame God for man's brutality.

1 John 5:19 informs us the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one.
The teenage boy was a victim of that fact.
God will put an end to Satan's influence (1 John 3:8).
Until then we all face difficult times.
As Jesus asked the hypocritical Pharisees:
"What prophet did you not kill?"
Most of God's servants in Biblical times faced great hardship.
It has to be this way for the moment.
Satan made the challenge that no man would stay faithful to God if he/she had to risk death. Job 2:4.

Maybe death is God's protection. Maybe taking a child home now is saving him from much suffering later. Who are you to know the end?? If death is the end, then it doesn't matter, but if there is something after death, it could be better or worse. I believe that God is just. If one suffers in this life, if he gets to heaven, the eternal incredible nature of God will be more than enough to compensate him for his short time of suffering on earth.

Sadly bad things happen because of the sinful nature of human beings.
When it is our time to go we will leave this earth. I've heard of people surviving a gun shot to the head. It wasn't their time to die and God wanted them to be used still on this earth.
Satan + mans evil heart = death
Jesus + mans repentant heart = life

God "protects" us by knowing that the truth of us (God's Son) remains in and of, and with, God. Nothing has changed. We remain as created. God knows there is nothing real that can harm us; harm is not God's will, only love; and only love is real...nothing unreal exists.

It's called choices God gave us all free will, like when you get angry you have to choice to react or move passed it, the victim is in a better people it's the one who committed the act that's damned to hell.

There is a time of death for every living thing. One has to go either killed or get a heart attack or anything....

God doesn't have to protect you there. That's the responsibility of the state.
