I am most interested in finding a local charity in the Cincinnati, OH area, but broad-based organizations are also welcome.

And, please don't try to be cute and tell me to send money to you. It's unoriginal and not helpful.

Thank you in advance.

I tried to search something for you, but, really not find anything.
The Salvation Army does a lot, I guess, and they may actually help you find other places.
Also, I will assume there a Children's Hospital there, contact them they do a lot for children and will welcome a little financial help.
Sorry I could not help more.
Below is Salvation Army and United Way and Childrens Hospital.

For a list of charities in the area, check out the first link (on the United Way of Greater Cincinnati website). For each item in the list, there's a short statement about what the organization does and who to contact. Organization websites are also listed, but it looks like they aren't hyperlinks, so you'll have to copy them and paste them into your Address field.

I'd like to plug a couple of charities in particular that I have heard a lot of good things about.

The first is People Working Cooperatively, a Cincinnati-area organization that provides "...more than 9,000 critical services a year for very-low-income elderly, disabled and other homeowners." Please see the second link for more information.

The second is the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Cincinnati. "IHN is a Unique Response to Homelessness, combining volunteers from the religious community with full-time professionals to reintegrate families into the community." They help homeless families with transportation, food, housing assistance, adult education, and tutoring for the children. More information at the third link below.

Thank you for your interest in local giving. Cincinnati needs more people like you. :)

From trying to help a friend, I know that Ohio has some of the hardest rules and limits for people on welfare etc. My friend got $96/month for six months (?) and that was it.

There's real need in your state for help for the homeless and those who are unable to work because of ill health etc. Can you find time to do some volunteering as well? That will give you a better sense of the organizations.

I ONLY give to small local groups. I've never had much money, so it peeves me when the big ones spend my entire contribution on soliciting me for more.
