i haven't had the surgery but was the head nurse at a rehab unit for surgery
recovery is pretty fast the most important thing is to get you up and walking asap
in the hospital they send you to physical therapy and attach your leg to a motorized machine to gently move the knee and prevent blood clots and then discharge you to either a rehab facility or a nursing home that has a specialized rehab unit
the average stay there is about 2-3 weeks where you are evaluated by a physical therapist and receive therapy on a daily basis to prepare you to return home
there will be some pain initially as with all surgeries but will be short lived
of course all people have different pain thresholds but your doctor will prescribe appropriate pain medication for you
i think you will actually find after the initial discomfort you will actually feel better because you no longer have that old bad knee
wish you the best
don't be worried
you'll be back in no time and better than ever
so before you have the surgery done get out those old dancing shoes and dust them off!!!!!

Salam Ostad jan

I used to work in orthopaedic surgery as a junior doctor assisting in knee surgery and also looking after the patients post operatively.
A knee replacement is needed when your own knee has been damaged or worn to an extent where the joint no longer functions properly and it is painful to walk or put weight through the joint. Do you know exactly what type of replacement you are having, whether it is going to be total or partial?

Basically, the surgery (in good hands) is very straighforward and effective operation. Most prosthesis nowadays are made from metal (titanium or a mix) and they are cemented in place with a special anti-bacterial cement. (its extremely important that precations are taken so that the join does not become infected as this is basically a very bad situation if it occurs). Part of the femur bone and the tibia are cut away and the correct size of prostethsis is secured into place. If your kneecap is in good condition this is kept but can be replaced if its found to be too worn and damaged itself.
It is a large procedure and you will be in some degree of pain and discomfort afterwards. You can expect to stay in hospital for 7-10 days after the operation and Its vital that you do the correct exercises and physiotherapy which is specially designed for you by your therapist post operatively.
You will have a long scar on the front of your knee and will need strong painkillers initially. It is hard work but the long term is great and I have seen amazing improvements in many of my patients...they come in barely able to walk and several weeks later they are a lot more comfortable walking and some even manage to go back to doing some sports afterwards. Full recovery takes a few months in reality but as you are healthy and hopefully willing to do the work required it might be even sooner.

A tip- the operation and outcomes are a little harder for those who are overweight (and risks of problems such as clots ) are increased. If you can lose weight before the procedure (its probably quite close now) that would also help and perhaps prevent you from having to have another operation on the other knee. Good luck!!

My mother had a total knee replacement performed on BOTH of her knees 3 years ago. She had some serious pain immediately following the procedure when she was still in "recovery" in the hospital. Then, they moved her to the rehabilitation hospital where she remained for five days. Each day, the pain began to dissipate and she was able to walk on her own when she was discharged. She was 52 and in healthy condition when she had the surgery. She continued physical thereapy for a few months, and she has yet to regret having the surgery. She is now in perfect condition and only has some troubles with actually sitting on her knees. Other than that, she can do everything and anything.

I personally haven't had one, but as a nurse I have taken care of many post-op. It's going to hurt, not going to lie to you. However, the thing you must do is get up and get going as soon as you are told to. Keep that knee moving, or you will regret it. It will get stiffened up and it will hurt worse if you don't. Plus, your recovery period will be much longer. Don't be afraid to take the pain medications, especially before you do any kind of physical therapy. It will help. You will have a device on your leg post-op that will keep your knee moving continuously for awhile. Even if it hurts, that's a very good thing as it will strengthen and promote healing to your tissues. Take care and good luck.

My Dad had both his knee's replaced and he said it only hurt for a few days.....i only think he took pain pills for 2 or 3 days and of course he had to have rehab so i don't think he had it so bad but then everybody is different. Just BE SURE to do everything they tell you to do, especially the rehab,,,,,,,,good luck and God bless.

PS. He is also your age and he is back to work selling cars which requires being on his feet alot of the day!

The price of knee joint replacement surgery is very low in India as compared to USA, UK and Canada. My cousin also got her hip replacement surgery in India through the forerunners healthcare .She is more than very happy with the results. She is totally pain free now. She just paid 25% of the amount she was quoted in USA and is all praise for this forerunners healthcare company.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low price, as all joint surgery is not covered by insurance in USA or by NHS in the UK. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.
