I am a non smoker and am not looking for harassment. This is just to help find some information for my sociology class. Please cease rudeness.

Well, google "smoking benefits" and there are a couple pages. Apparently smoking is associated with lowered risks of Parkinsons and Alzheimers and certain types of cancer. Nicotine can be therapeutic for schizophrenia. And of course, there are the immediate benefits of smoking, which are the reasons people do it: pleasure, mental stimulation / mood lift, weight loss / maintaining a lower weight.

I am a smoker and even I have to say that as far as I am concerned there are no good benefits for smoking... they ahve proven beyong a doubt the harmful effects of smoking but the rumors about good things associated with smoking are just that... rumors.
I really dont see how smoking cigs can offset some diseases... unless it is by giving you another disease so you forget about the first one.
As far as being thereputic... the only thing I can tell you is because I smoke.. once you are addicted to the cigs, yes it is calming to you if you are stressed, but that is only because it is a drug and your body needs that "fix"once you get it, you feel better.. when you dont have it, you feel like crap.

This old Lucky Strike ad gives you the plus side:

Feeling low, feeling tense
Hear some plain old common sense:
Smoke a Lucky.
To feel your level best,
Smoke a Lucky.
Picks you up when you are down
Calms you down when you are tense
Feel your best and do your best,
Smoke a Lucky.
LSMFT
Lucky Strike means Fine Tobacco
That helps you feel your level best.
Smoke a Lucky

After a few weeks of addiction, you're just smoking not to feel crappy. You become a dirty disgusting outcast, all you can think about is when you are going to get your next fix. Not to "be your level best", but merely to stop having a nic-fit.

There are better options for fixing your mood that don't cause cancer (exercise and meditation are just two).

Hello -- There are no benefits of smoking. Believe me.
There's cancer. I had a very dear, close friend of mine died
of throat cancer at a very young age. Because, I was around
other people that smoked, I now have 3 stents in my heart
to keep me alive. How very sad is that! Now I can't be around
ANY one who is smoking. I was 95% closed. All from second
hand smoke!!

My husband says that he actually acquires more oxygen when he smokes than I do with just "normal" inhalation. I don't think that there are any benefits to cigarettes. Good luck in your endeavors.

People say that cigarettes calm them down, but they are actually stimulants, so they are speeding up your heart rate which is not good. So, I would say, even having one to calm you down is not a benefit.

If I can't get to sleep, I'll sometimes have a smoke. Usually does the trick, and is safer than sleeping pills.
