I just noticed that my 2.5 years old son put some play dough inside his nose. Somehow I managed him to sneeze and got a small block of playdough(blue color) out. I cannot see anymore inside and he is playing as usual. Should I go see a doctor now, what else should I do?

Playdough is pretty safe. Honestly I wouldn't worry at all. The nose is designed to clean itself out and playdough is mostly flour, salt and dye.

You could put some saline drops up there just to be sure.

Also this is a great question for Poison Control. Check your phone book! I am sure you have one.

If you cannot see anymore in his nose, and he's not bothered by it, then its probably fine.

Play dough actually is water based, and when injested or... inpacted... normal bodily fluids break it down and dispell it.

If you were to go to the doctor, in most cases they would look inside his nose , and if they found more than they thought was safe they would irrigate his notrils to flush the play dough out.

Saline solution and a nasal aspirator will occomplish the same thing.

You want to avoid infection, but the high sodium base of the play dough makes it hard to grow bacteria. If you are concerned about it call his doctor and ask to make an appointment.

It probably doesnt warrent an ER visit or immediate drive to the doctors, but the nurse on duty when you call will advise you better.

Yeah, I'd take him to the doc just in case... you don't know how far he actually shoved it up there, and there could be some still stuck in his nasal passages. It is better to have it checked out by the doc than have stuff clog him up or start growing bacteria in there. You can try this trick as well... sit him in a warm bath and run warm (not hot) water over his head for about 5 minutes (not continuously- let him breathe). This should help loosen up the nasal passages and let anything flow out. Talk to the doc first to make sure that there isn't any big chunks that should be removed.

No harm in asking your Dr. instead of us. BTW my daughter put a bead up her nose when she was 3 and our MD had her come in then sent her to the ER when she couldn't get it out. The bead was hard plastic and the concern was that my daughter would aspirate it through her sinuses into her lungs. I don't believe you have the same concern with Play Do as it will probably dissolve over time but check with the experts to make sure.

Call your doctor, just to be sure. But, honestly I wouldn't worry too much because play dough is very safe. It's made for kids to play with and kids to all kinds of crazy stuff. Goodluck.

If he is breathing normally I wouldn't worry BUT if he begins to seem "congested" in only that side of his nose, if it begins to bleed or if you notice a foul smell get right to the pediatrician as there may still be some in there & it may be infected. Hopefully everything is ok. Good luck!

If he put a whole bunch uo his nose and you got some out then if there was some left it went down the back of his nose down his throat and will end up in his stomach therefore he will poop it out. I hate play-dough, it makes a mess on carpets, and hardwood floors not to mention furniture and then now this!!!!!
Throw it out!!!!!!

Just call your Dr.He'll mostly likely tell you if you notice him sounding stuffy to take him in!I'm sure he is ok since he is acting normal!

I would call your Dr and ask them. Kids love to put things in their nose. I'm sure he will be fine.
