The navy is a great branch of service. The opportunities are plentiful, the duty is important, the travel is priceless in terms of seeing the world at no cost to you. The learning is unprecedented in terms of knowing about life. Those salty, older seamen take youngsters, like yourself, under their wing and teach you many of the important facets of living in the world, today.
I'm not talking about the academics taught in colleges and universities, I'm talking about the social and practical challenges that a sailor might experience in a foreign land, or aboard ship, or interfacing with fellow seaman, or simply the things mom and dad forgot to mention.
The service is a growing process for many young men and women because you are still in the development years of your life. Take advantage of it and enjoy it. Years later, you will look back at life as a seaman with great fondness. This is not bias on my part, because I served six years as a Marine.

Coming form a Navy Wife it can be very rewarding. You will be away from loved ones sometimes for long periods of time( this could be a good thing or a bad thing lol). But over all the pros out way the cons. You really need to research all the branches. Decide what you want to specialize in and then decide what branch is best for you. Remember when you ask a question like this you are going to get some biased answered, There are great things about all of the branches of military, That is why only you can decide what is right for you. make a list of what YOU think the pros and cons are for each branch. Then look at which ones offer what you would like to do. That should help you come closer if not make the decision.

Well I was dating someone who was in the Army. And although they may help you with benefits and college expences you will not recieve this until you have served your duty. If you join the navy you may very well end up in the war zone. It is an honor to serve our country but be honest with yourself when considering that you might be in Iraq or Kuwait not long after basic training. Is this something you could honestly see yourself doing?
The person that I was dating constantly said that the military offers you so much but that it is "all lies" and there is always a catch. So just be careful and realize what you may be getting your self into. If you are willing to serve in the Navy and fight for our country well then thank you for that. But realize that you are only 20 years old and once you join the military you will never be the same again. Everything changes......
Hope this helps..

The only person who can make that decision is yourself because you are the one that will have to live with it for the rest of your life. If your having second thoughts or having trouble making up your mind, I'd take that as a sign not to do it. Wait a little while, maybe try college or a trade school. If that doesn't work out and after you've given it sometime and you are still interested, then you have your answer. My lil cuz had wanted to go into the military since she was 5 but when it came time for college, we (as in the family) didn't want her to sign up so she gave college a go for a yr. It wasn't for her and she finally enlisted into the Airforce, she has just graduated boot camp and loves it, says this is what she was meant to do with her life and theres no doubt in her mind. Basically, when you know, you know. If there is any doubt, then take it as a sign and see if there are other things you may be interested in. You are still young and have you whole 20's to decide what you want to. Good Luck!

Where can you find pleasure
Search the world for treasure
Learn science technology
Where can you begin to make your dreams all come true
On the land or on the sea
Where can you learn to fly
Play in sports or skin dive
Study oceanography
Sign up for the big band
Or sit in the grandstand
When your team and others meet
In the navy
Yes, you can sail the seven seas
If you like adventure
Don't you wait to enter
The recruiting office fast
Don't you hesitate
There is no need to wait
They're signing up new seamen fast
Maybe you are too young
To join up today
But don't you worry 'bout a thing
For I'm sure there will be
Always a good navy
Protecting the land and sea

Only join if you want to be out to sea months on end. Good news is that if you're out to sea for a really long time then you can have 1 beer per month...
Join the Air Force if you want a better life. Join the Marines or Army if you want to see the brutal combat up close and personal... They all offer college programs, but I think the Army generally offers the highest amounts of money...

I'm active duty Navy, and I must say, it's not that bad.
I'm in the FTS (Full Time Support) Program, which allows me to go anywhere in the country working at Navy Reserve Centers (There's one in every state, more in the more populated states).
I'm considered an active duty reservist, and I get all the pay and benefits of regular active duty folks. I'll probably never see a ship in my lifetime.
In the nine years that I've been in so far, I've been given the opportunity to receive a college education for free, only having to pay for my books.
Being from Washington State, I've been able to travel all over the country, from San Diego, CA to Brunswick, ME and from Chicago, IL to New Orleans, LA.
It's really not that bad.

Dude, what's wrong with college?
People die in the military, or they come back insane, or nothing happens and they are just very bored and very far away from gf and old friends for a few years. The navy is less dangerous than the infantry, but suicide boat bombers happen, along with accidents and sabotage. Unless you could face death, don't do this.
