Many schools have been cutting down on the Art program which I think is terrible. My younger daughter has it once a week and my older one gets it 2 times a week for half of the year. I think Art is important to a child.

Our elementary schools have art once a week. Call the school and see if this is something that is rotated among the specials or if only certain grades have art. For example, our fifth graders in the middle school have art twice a week during one trimester, but not the other two trimesters.

If it has been cut, get together with other parents and complain.

This is a sad sign of the times that some districts have cut back on art, music and library.

Due to budget cuts, many schools are cutting out the arts curriculum. At my son's school, they have a rotating schedule. Now that he's in second grade, they have PE three times a week, music once a week, and art once a week. However, all three teachers for these classes work together, and they have overlap. For example, they do music related things in PE class, art related things in music class, etc. It's a shame that it has to be this way, but they had to cut the budget somewhere, and unfortunately arts seem to get cut first. The middle schools and high schools around here have much more involved art and music programs, but I believe that they are electives that are taken after normal school hours.

My 8 year old has art once a week but attends an after school art program once a week as well. When I was a kid I had art only once or twice a week as well.

The good thing is she has gym 2 times a week and music 2 times a week.

I have kids in two different schools.

My KG girl doesn't have art class since she is only in 1/2 day KG. Next year in first grade she'll start rotating "specials" daily. They have art one day, music the next and gym the next. So, with three things in rotation it means that each week they will have two special classes twice and one of them only once. (art/music/gym/art/music - for example)

My son is in second grade in a different school and they use the same system of rotating specials.

When I (1980) was in Elemantary they were always pulling the art program. One year they would have it and the next they would not. Many schools cannot afford the program due to budgetary cuts. That's how it is in Michigan. I would contact the school board of your child's district and ask.
