The schools here (in my state) teach and push illiteracy.
Yes, I am serious...
They have a writing method that teaches kindergartners and 1st graders to spell phonetically first and then go back and re learn things the correct way in second or even third grade.
It is a big issue with me because I for one believe that kids learn and retain what they learn very young. Back tracking and intentionally sounding out words and writing them any old way you want, to me is useless and dangerous.
They don't agree and with all their testing and proving pointless points, I'm sure that the illiteracy rate in this state is, as a direct result of these programs, what it is... they not only force these programs on you but push and swear by them as well.
But what do you expect from a state that draws almost half of its education funding from Lotto sales and winnings.

depends on the school area
on the average- teachers and schools can only teach if the individual is willing to learn
I was given a great education through Public Schools
Son went to Parochial Schools also obtaining a outstanding foundation/preparation for college

compared to what?
compared to the schools they have in many countries, yes.
compared to my ideal, then no.
The class sizes are too big.
Teaching doesn't pay well to compete for most of the best talent.
