India's 1.2 million strong army is often criticized by critics as "surplus". But keeping in mind the fact that we are big country (7th largest in the world) and more importantly, are surrounded by two hostile neighbours, the strength is not more than what it should be. One of our neighbour has active support from the world's only superpower, and the other is a superpower in the making. Under these circumstances, how can we say that our military is surplus? Plus, if India is to play a greater role in world affairs in general and regional affairs in particular, it needs to have a sizeable credible line of defence, which it's military very appropriately offers.

What I feel is that nowadays military is not about numbers, it is about technology application. A country like ours cannot afford to maintain a large size military, which in any war scenario as of today or near future, is as good as useless until they are up to date with the latest technology. We will be spending wastefully on maintaining a large military manpower count. A very good suggestion is that all able bodied Indians should be made to undergo basic compulsory military training and put in a small time of their lives in the military. In times of an emergency they can be called upon and can handle more than half of the jobs that just require a basic knowledge, without having to spend on fultime recruits. Fulltime professional army in reduced numbers can do the real work. I think, if I am not mistaken, this the approach adopted in Switzerland also.

It isn't only India that is having surplus army. Our hostile neighbours such as Pakistan and Bangladesh too are having surplus military as well.
Arms manufacturers and their supportive governments were so far successful in developing the 'hostility idea' among these warring nations. Once south Asian Countries decide to do without the arms we are purchasing day to day, we shall witness great development in this region.

We sorrounded by 2 nuclear armed enemies will have to modernise the existing army on the basis of Israel's Digital army plan . Instead of increasing the strength we must now focus on improving the quality of the existing force . Our one soldier should ne made equivalent to 10 soldiers of China . For that he should be given excellent training and equipment .
Of all the wars that have come and gone one thing is clear - The difference in a war is training and not equipment .

To the size of the country our military strength is totally
inadequate. Do you not know that soldiers some time shoot their officer's because the later refused leave? you can imagine the shortage from this. When ever you meet a soldier you ask him does he get adequate leave? his answer will invariably NO

India has two large (1 hostile) neighbors who field sizeable armys. In my opinion, India needs to modernize while maintaining its current force levels.
