It may not be in a town. But, St James' is in the city centre. I don't know about anyone else, but I don't say I'm goin into City for a night out. I say I'm goin into Town (or toon, as it's known in Newcastle). Come to think of it, Glasweigans call Glasgow 'Toon' as well.

Being a Geordie, it was always said "aam gannin inta toon.
It just stuck. You have the town moor, the town hall, but anyway, Newcastle does have St.Nicholas as a catherdral, so you are right.
It is technically then the City of Newcastle, but still lovingly known as the toon.

Because we do! I agree with Sparky, you go into town (toon) for shopping or drinking, or whatever.
