my rides usually cost in the $8-12 range. i used to tip 4-5 bucks, but people have been telling me recently they don't tip at all; now i'm confused. cabs are so expensive and i can hardly afford to take them (have to avoid drinking and driving), let alone tip a lot.

i don't tip cab drivers at all, they already make a decent salary of $40,000-$60,000 according to a few new articles I read. I live in new jersey

I often find not tipping cab drivers is better than a $1 or $2 tip. When I do tip a dollar or two, cabbies often get an irritated and ask for more.

This makes me feel as if I shouldn't have offered the gesture in the first place.

It depends on the size of the basic fare. If its a large fare (over $20), then I've tipped 20 to 25%. If its a short fare ( up to $20), then I tip up to %50. Hey, he's gotten out of line and has to go back to the end and a short fare usually mens you need to get somewhere fast and if he/she can make that happen its worth it.

I would never tip for bad service and if good service then tip 10%.

Two dollars is normal but tipping is optional. You should never feel obligated to tip if it is not warranted.
