The last 2 years we have had absolutely horrible Thanksgiving experiences. This year I am buying a Honeybaked Ham and would like to make some wonderful side dishes and desserts.

What would you suggest?

Mac & cheese goes well with ham. So does baked apples. Hawaiian bread (slightly sweet bread) OR--homestyle biscuits. Baked beans go well with ham, too. There are lots of menu options depending on your personal preference.

MY favorite ham dinner menu would have to be:

Ham
Mac & cheese
Green salad or cole slaw
Green beans or green bean casserole
Corn on the cob
Bread
Baked apples
Pumpkin pie

I also did a search using "baked ham side dishes" and came up with some website options. Recipes are included in the site noted below. If you'd really like to take it easy, check your local grocery store--they often have holiday meals "in a box" and I bet you can order just the sides to go with your ham.

Good luck!

The first time I ever bought a Honeybaked Ham I also thought it was weird too. However, when you buy your ham, it's fully cooked. So, all that is needed is to take the ham out of the fridge and allow it to sit a room temp. for a few hours. My husband insists on having it served warm, so when I have to, I put it in the oven at 100 degrees (it doesn't dry out the ham), or 15 minutes before I'm ready to serve it, I place it in a warmed chaffing dish. I put one slice on the bottom of the pan, and the rest on top of the slice (this is because the bottom sliced is the only one that's over cooked & dried out) The rest is perfect. Putting it in the oven at 300 plus degrees will dry out your very expensive ham (its no necessary). So it's true, simply follow their instructions for a perfect ham. It's VERY GOOD!

Candied sweet potatoes (can of yam's...drained! in a shallow baking dish, top with butter and brown sugar and some mini marshmellow's and bake for 25 minutes @ 325D.) then 5 minutes BEFORE serving top with EXTRA marsh.....YUM-O.
And even green bean casserole is good with ham!

How about trying this side.

6 medium potatoes peeled chopped and boiled
3 stalks celery diced
1/2 large onion diced
4 or 5 slices white bread diced

Mash your potatoes adding butter salt and pepper. (as if you were making regular mashed potatoes.) Set aside. Saute your celery and onion in 1 stick of butter. (Its Thanksgiving...live it up. Plus you need this amount so your bread will toast up in the pan.) When your celery and onion is almost translucent add your cubed bread and toast them up in the pan. Combine your bread, celery and onion mixture with your mashed potatoes. Spread the filling into a casserole dish and bake until top is a bit golden. I serve this every year and its delicious.

Stuffing, mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, anything that you would have served with turkey should be good with the ham. I started serving just ham instead of turkey the last few years and everyone liked the same things without the turkey. Good Luck!

Baked sweet potatoes are great tasting and really good for you - whole baked potatoes, not the candied ones. They are super easy- you can even nuke them. Rice dishes are great with ham-
there are some great wild rice kits from Uncle Ben's, which can also be microwaved- nice to be speedy, and free up your stove burners for stuff that must be cooked stove top.
Pies are nice and cozy and traditional with a scoop of ice cream.
