Think the other people have it covered for the most part. What you need is going to depend on what you still have left on the car. i take a wild guess, but they probably removed the heater boxes and installed j-tubes. So, in other words you'll probably need the most expensive (not that you can't get them used cheap, not a big deal) part of the whole systems. Another thing to keep in mind, the repo heater boxes out on the market are not nearly as good as the original ones. And with this system you need everything to be working as good as it can, if you don't want to freeze. Anyways, email me if you want pictures from the shop manual of what your heater system should look like. patrickm2213@yahoo.com

The heat in a V W is drawn off the exhaust pipes via heater boxes that are wrapped around the exhaust pipes. If the heater boxes are still there you are in luck. All that is probably needed are the hoses that connect the heater boxes to the heater ducts built into the chassis. If for some reason the heater boxes were removed, like to install a header system, then like the other guy says you will have to get the stock exhaust system and all the gaskets and the two connecting hoses. And the easiest way to replace all that is to drop the engine out of the car..and for a picture a good repair manual is your best bet there....good luck.

The VW bug was equipped with a ducted heater system that ran through the floor boards. It only had a couple of parts. There were shrouds over the exhaust manifolds to extract the heat and flexible tubes to connect it to the body.
If you are talking about the after-market gasoline heaters that were installed, you are in a whole new ball game. These used gasoline and were usually mounted in the front luggage compartment. They were problematic and somewhat dangerous, but extremely efficient when they worked. Connecting them was simply splicing into the fuel line and running power to the blower and switch control. Pretty straight forward stuff.
