well in India we can see that we tend to prefer english over our own language whether its hindi or any other regional language?why those people are treated inferior who converse in their own language?
there was a case in Delhi university last year where a girl didn't get admission in Miranda house because she was from a Govt. school.
why our own languages are loosing their own identity iin their own country?

Because English is THE world language. By all means, speak your regional languages at home, but don't hold your breath waiting around for all the English speakers in the world to learn them too.

India has several recognized languages ... 18 scheduled and around 100 non-scheduled according to '91 census. Since every region has its own language, its quite hard to find a common language for communication (yes not everyone in india knows hindi). So if you are learning a new language then why not learn english rather than hindi so that you are able to communicate not only with your fellow countrymen but people around the world. What I am trying to say here is that there is no superiority factor or anything. Further, the example that you gave in the question doesn't highlight all the facts at all. Was the girl meeting all the cutoffs? Did she clear the interview? To deduce that she didn't get admission because she was from a govt. school is incorrect. For every such example, there would be many who are from govt. school and got admissions to the college of their choice as they met all the cutoffs and admission criterias.

Well I guess that in India preference is given more to English rather than Hindi or and other regional language by most of the Indian Population. I wonder why is that so but a person is consider inferior if they dont speak in English. People who prefer to speak in Hindi are made fun off...so as per me English is given a superiority over Hindi or any other regional language in India, which is wrong.....Respect should be given to your own language. Knowing an additional language is an addition but not respecting your own language for that reason is wrong....

because we are unfortunately suffering from a colonial hangeover.its how are society has conditioned us to believe. And anyways all the documents public or private are done in english therefore it's implied that if u can read and write english then u stand somewhere and can get workd done. Its a big shame but what can we do. We are soo obssed with loosing our identity in a wave of foreign influence. Have a look at germany china france all have grown but yet have not forgotten thir language and take rpide for that matter in their culture and ways of life. The country that forgets what it is and tries to copy, is one without a soul.We live in an oppurtunistic world and unless major change is there we will unfortunately continue to admire call centre accents and never quite realize that we really did once upon a time teach the world to count. Now it seems the world is teaching us to forget our uniquness and embrace the mediocrity in the quest to be global we will cease to be local

Our young Cool Brigade thinks its cool to talk in english, even if they hardly know head or tail of grammar, they will speak english for everything. I am in no way condemning english. We got to accept that English has become a global language, if we want to compete on a golbal platform we have to use english. And its really good, it gives us real good exposure. Look at Japnese & French and Chinese, they all were reluctant to learn english, but sooner or later they all have decided jump on the bandwagon. So in that sense yes for us to progress globally english is essential cause it is a common medium to converse to any person all over the world. English is no longer a language of a nation.

But, here there is big big But..... English is English & Hindi is Hindi. Hindi is our national language and we atleast hafta respect it. In no way hindi can be disrespected in India. I myself use english in my professional life, but in my personal life I always prefer Hindi. Earlier I gave example of Japnese, French & chinese, Even though they have now embraced English, they still consider English as secondary language. They are very proud to use there mother tounge wherever they can.

But the Gen Next in India, specially the metroes, people think they are the hip & happening only if they talk in pure accented english. Some of my friends have tried to put an accent in my english, but I reply to them simply that if Americans can have there own English then hell we are the second largest population wise, I will used my own English, The desi accented English. I dont need to eat cheese cake and then say words like 'Entrepreneur', I will see it with the same crisp Indian Diction when i say it.

Also we dont need to forget that Sanskrit & Latin are the basic languages through which all the modern languages are evolved.

It is due to changing the world scenario, mostly the companies operated in india are MNC's, and there a standard language is required in which everyone can interect.
But the people has taken this thing wrong, they started regarding that non-english speaking people are illiterate and are of not that much standard. It is completely wrong. All this is short term success and it doesn't work in long term. The thing which matter is knowledge and attitude. Think either dhirubhai Ambani knows English?? neither of japnease and chinease people speaks English, still they are most successfull

thats very true because of globalisation and so people started feeling that if u want to rule at the higher level or atleast above than most of the people then you must know english very well and should be accepted widely being an international language, but yes certain lines need to be drawn as the case mentioned here. Most of the people know regional language and thats not bad or no need of considering them inferior, rather I would say they are the most foolish people who underestimate thinking inferior. If we really see then probably those people have real or better knowledge than that of so called BPO-LIKE people, they just know how to abuse in english and being odd thinking being too cool --- rubbish !! In real sense they are losing our own identity. So as far as knowledge of english is concerened it should be upto certain limit, but people, thinking other people inferiors would be the biggest mistake and proving them fools !!

In India or take it any part of the world English is considered as the primary medium for communication . Take for ex's all the call center's , the MNC's one communicate's to the people outside India or even in interior's through a comman medium which is English and this is the reason why most of the people are swtiching to to this language .

I think it's because a lot of languages are spoken in India. Therefore, choosing one in particular would seem as if one language was the "dominant" one. So, they chose English because it seems more neutral than to have to choose one in particular.

And I think it's stupid if people consider that speaking a native language makes you inferior. But hey! I'm not from India, so I don't know anything about that.

In India there is a saying "Gar ki Murgi Dal Barabar".

We have a very few person who can appreciate our language.

All Indian language are systematic and are pronounced in a similar way. We also have Bara Kadi which keeps the uniformity.

English though international is an unsystematic language take the word
- to , go , do, no, so,
how r they pronunced? appears stupid!!! because they are.

I wanted to learn some more language but time & people to teach are not available, because people think to learn english is towards moving to green pastures.

WHAT INDIANS CAN DO IS TO PROPOGATE THIS TEACHING OF LANGUAGE(S)
