My St. Bernard does this often. My vet told me that their ears are far more sensitive than ours and when they tilt their head like that they are listening for either the source, or the noise you are making is hard on their ears. My lab does this only when he hears sirens. :o) It is cute when they do it though.

It is so that they can expand the range of the sound hitting their ear drum. If they tilt one ear up and one down, they are getting a different angle of the sound in order to pin point what it is, and how familiar it is to them.

I think they tilt their heads to hear better - to get a different perception of the sounds...

come on I see humans do the same thing
it is so they can try and distinguish what the noise is and whee it is coming from...and to see if it is actually what they hear..
and just maybe with some of the noises, it just might hurt the god's ears a little, they have better hearing than humans do..
good luck

they are probably curious, just like babies under the age of 2 are...so they are discovering the world thru the sounds that they hear

they tilt their head so they can hear soemthing better, they also prick their ears if they can. I know this beagle named Sammy, he pricks his ears up when he sees/hears another dog. when he pricks his ears, his forehead wrinkles up, and it is so cute!
