Because it contains a chemical - tryptophan - which aids sleep and relaxation. Turkey, interestingly enough, also contains a lot of tyrptophan. So how about a turkey sandwich and a glass of warm milk? Sleep tight!

it doesn't work for me ;-)
my take on in is just that, in some people, warm milk takes their subconscious mind back to baby times when they would fall asleep after breastfeeding.

the heated milk separates the tryptophan and sugar for easier absorbtion.
The increased insulin in blood stream from sugar assists the tryptophan to cross the blood brain barrier.

warming milk makes it release a substance called trypophene ( not sure of spelling) that makes you sleepy, its the same one found in turkey ( that makes you sleepy)
