I took him to the vet and the vet was happy I did. he gave him new medicine and also a tablet to help with the phlegm buildup. he said his lungs and heart sound great it is just a badly conjested nose. thanks for all of the answers they were a lot of help, hope all your dogs are healthy

I don't know about dogs, but with people nighttime exhibited cold symptoms are allergies. You say according to the vet, so did the vet test him for other things and rule everything else out?
My sister in law's dog is actually allergic to meat, unbeleivable, but true. If the vet said it's a cold ie not something else for sure then try changing his food. At 9 weeks he's still young and maybe is having a hard time with the food your giving him. Ask the vet about the dog food and possible digestion problems or allergies.

PS The weather is cooling and it just occured to me your puppy also might need a little help keepig warm at night if you don't heat very well so you might want to try something as simple as dressing it and/or giving it a blanket to snuggle in at night. Also make sure your puppy basket or bed isn't near a window, door or anything that can cause a draught.

Sounds like kennel cough to me. Its usually worse at night. The cough/gag behavior looks worse that it really is. If not treated it could last a month, but if treated should clear up in a week. Its similar to our cold...virus caused... so it doesn't disappear immediately. Also want to be sure the pup doesn't have hookworms (found when stool is examined under a microscope). Hookworms can cause coughing too.

KENNEL COUCH IS CONSTANT SOME TIMES...DEPENDS ON HOW LONG THEY HAVE HAD IT...SCAR TISSUE BUILDS UP IN THEIR THROAT IF THEY HAVE HAD IT LONGER AND THEY TEND TO COUGH MORE...TO BE SAFE I WOULD ASK YOUR VET FOR AN ANTIBIOTIC AND NOT AMOXICILLION EITHER...JUST INCASES IT IS KENNEL COUGH.....AMOX. DOESN'T QUIET KICK IT AND VETS LOVE TO PRESCRIBE THAT ONE. JUST LISTEN GOOD TO IT'S LUNGS AND MAKE SURE THEY DON'T GET FLUID IN THEM...GOOD LUCK..I BREED YORKIES AND I BOUGHT A PUPPY WITH KENNEL COUGH AND NURSED HIM BACK TO HEALTH IT TOOK 8 WEEKS FOR HIM TO TOTALLY GET OVER IT...I PERSONALLY HAVE NEVER HAD A PUPPY WITH IT BEFORE HIM....

Maybe it's allergies to his sleeping area? When in doubt, talk to a vet....

The vet should know and if he doesn't give satisfactory answers, find another vet.
